Peckham Road Buildings
A new creative campus
Working from a very early stage with the staff of Camberwell College of Arts, Alumno sought to provide a creative and cultural hub for students studying at the College. The aspiration was to create a campus environment that offers a unique setting which presented an exciting yet challenging opportunity for the Team.
Working closely with Southwark Council (the previous owners of the buildings) we ensured that the project addressed key local issues and provided a long term future for the buildings.
Consultation
All but one of the buildings are Grade II Listed and are with a Conservation Area. Alumno undertook an extensive consultation exercise with the Council’s Conservation Department, English Heritage and The Georgian Society to ensure the final scheme met with their expectations and that conservation issues were fully addressed.
Re-imagining spaces from the past
Over the years the interiors of the buildings have changed greatly from their original form – Alumno are seeking to re-instate many of the rooms to their original plan. All the remaining fixtures and fittings will be retained and reused, where possible.
Re-developing old buildings come with their own set of challenges, however we are always keen to seek solutions and create new and imaginative ways of providing spaces which met the needs of the students living in them.
“Alumno have demonstrated an understanding and commitment to the key elements that ensures a successful partnership and in turn creates a successful project. Alumno appreciate the key issues facing our students, many of whom come from diverse backgrounds.
Alumno have an appreciation of the detail, that ensures the accommodation on offer to our students is well conceived and desirable, which is vital to the continued success of the university and our ability to continue to attract the best students.
Alumno have fully involved the University and Camberwell College, in all the key elements of the design and the specification, ensuring that the accommodation is of good quality, functional and well designed.”
