The Alumno Team
The multidisciplinary team at Alumno has a diverse background of knowledge and experience. All are passionate about design led architecture and placemaking. The team strives to go the extra mile to ensure the Alumno schemes are delivering positive additions to the whole community.
I’ve always had an interest in the built environment and design, and this was further developed after I gained an MA in Housing from Bristol University in 1994, after finishing my initial degree in Glasgow. Since then I have spent my career pursuing this interest and passion both in the private and public sector.
This experience has provided me with a huge depth of knowledge about the development and delivery of various housing models, particularly for universities and colleges, together with an understanding of successful management and funding aspects. I also have similar experience within the healthcare sector.
I’m a firm believer in pushing and challenging conventional approaches and developing new ideas. I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Housing and the National Housing Federation, which broadens my appreciation of housing and the ways in which it can make a difference to the way people live.
Outside of Alumno I have a keen interest in the arts and 20th century design. I also have a passion for music and cinema, and love spending time with my family and two young daughters.
My work for a number of major public sector healthcare companies really paved the way for my role at Alumno, where I’ve formulated innovate funding and cash flow mechanisms designed specifically for public and private sector property development. This provides a solid foundation for everything we do and helps drive the business forward.
Particularly important was my time at Healthgate Group, which pioneered the concept of NHS hospital entrance retail malls. I also gained valuable experience as a founder member of BHE Development, which develops real estate in the healthcare sector.
PR & Office Manager
Since graduating in Law at Leeds Metropolitan University and qualifying as a solicitor, I’ve held a range of roles with law firms and in the creative arts. My role at Alumno involves ensuring that the day-to-day aspects of the business run smoothly, keeping everyone organised and liaising closely with clients.
I have a particular interest in my role in developing student focus groups and design competitions, where we ask students to get involved and have a say in how the buildings are designed. I love the buzz and excitement of this fascinating, busy and vibrant business, as well as working alongside a talented and experienced team.
Through my passion for the arts, I curate and oversee exhibitions at a West London gallery – a reflection of my true fascination with design and the creative industries.
I have joined Alumno from a design and project management focussed background which led me from my beginnings in Germany, where I studied Architecture and worked on my first projects in Berlin to more recent projects in the UK. My involvement covered inception, design, procurement and construction stages of residential, student housing, commercial, refurbishment and mixed uses schemes of various scale.
In tandem with my design-led experiences as a lead consultant on various building projects I grew keen to explore value creation, business strategies in conjunction with sustainable aims or limitations. As a consequence I undertook a Master’s in International Business and Development at Birkbeck University of London which broadened my perspective on the business sector in general, stakeholder management and marketing & business strategies.
This somewhat complemented many of the responsibilities I had, for instance finding creative solutions to project specific problems often involving regulatory challenges or commercial assessments and strategic planning.
Apart from making most of my experiences to help creating new, distinctive and inspiring student homes, in my spare time I am continuing to discover London and surrounds. I also enjoy a good film or documentary and would love to travel much more and yes, I am still interested in excellent architecture, interior design and graphic design.
Since graduating I have had a varied career which started as a digital cartographer and led me in to property. I built up a small property business in Scotland, developing and letting out properties, but my drive to broaden my interests and knowledge led me to London where I increased my experience working in the high end residential market.
I have an enthusiasm for design and the arts and am passionate about creating innovative student spaces. My entrepreneurial background combined with my experience provides a good combination for delivering high quality projects.
My interests outside of work lie in the arts, travel and cuisine.
I joined Alumno from Cushman & Wakefield’s Development Consulting team where I advised landowners at the front end of the development process on devising viable mixed use schemes, but also right through to securing development partners. The role was fascinating in that I worked across all uses including residential, commercial, leisure and education; and with nearly every advisory team throughout the business. Other work included town centre masterplanning, planning viability reviews, financial modelling and site disposals.
Prior to C&W I worked for 7 years for the Mayor of London at the GLA (also previously the London Development Agency) as Development Manager managing a portfolio of large strategic development sites. My largest project being the appointment of the Silvertown Partnership as developer on Silvertown Quays in the Royal Docks in 2012, a 62 acre which subsequently secured consent for 3,000 homes, 2 million sq ft commercial space and 3 million sq ft of brand space, end GDV £3+ million. Other work included negotiating commercial and legal agreements, securing planning, project managing works and site disposals.
My role at Alumno combines all of the above and I really enjoy working collaboratively with our partners and multidisciplinary teams to deliver inspiring new student housing schemes through good quality design and place making.
Outside of work I enjoy cycling, climbing, hiking, travel and keeping my ear in with Spanish.
My career in property began in Perth, Western Australia after graduating with a degree in Commercial Law and Property (Hons) from Curtin University and joining a developer who held the largest land bank in the country. As Assistant Development Manager at Peet Limited I was involved in delivering various stages of vibrant, master planned communities which taught me the fundamentals of finance, planning and stakeholder management.
The better part of a decade later and my experience has broadened to include a role as Development Associate for Merchant Land Investments Ltd here in London, whereby a small team granted me full nose-to-tail exposure to the UK development process. With a focus on residential led schemes in Central London, the company took a very hands on, personalised approach to their developments which I attribute to my swift immersion and understanding of the London property market.
Student accommodation brings its own challenges; our developments need to remain as adaptable and fluid as the demographic who occupies them. Equally I find the quest to remain ahead of the curve and the ability to trial fresh concepts or facilities very rewarding.
A constant desire for new adventures and passport stamps sees me often abroad, usually to sunnier climes.
